Erma Mae   Cox
3/7/1916- 3/8/2005

Erma Mae Cox, the second eldest of sixteen children, was born March 7,1916 to the late Albert Sutton and Carrie Mae Starkey-Sutton in Lenore County, North Carolina. Erma received her early education at Bright's School and attended Postoak Baptist Church in North Carolina.

In her early teen years, Erma met her soul mate, the late James Herman Cox. Their courtship soon led them to join hands in Holy Matrimony in October, 1933. Through this union, Erma and James were blessed with five daughters and two sons.

Erma and her family migrated to Brooklyn, New York, where she became a homemaker and worked several jobs tirelessly and effortlessly for many years, but she always took time to travel and enjoy the many sites. She was well-known and loved by all who met her.

Soon after arriving in New York City, Erma restored her faith in the LORD and became one of the founding members of Brooklyn Temple, Seventh-day Adventist Church. She served her LORD diligently as an Usher, Deaconess and Choir member for many, many years where all fondly called her "Sister Cox" or "Grandma."

"Grandma" was famously known locally and afar for her cooking skills and made every event special with her mouth-watering dishes, especially her cakes and pies.

On March 8, 2005, Erma joined in spirit with those who have gone on before her, seeking eternal peace so well deserved. Three of her daughters (Ernestine, Bernice and Edna Mae) preceded her in death.

Erma's memory will forever be cherished by: two daughters, Carrie R. Knox (John) and Ella L. Cox; two sons, James A. Cox (Rosie) and Freddie L. Cox, all of Brooklyn, New York; two sisters, Lula Sutton and Mary Elizabeth Sutton, both of Newark, New Jersey and one brother, Samuel Sutton of Brooklyn, New York; twenty-one grandkids, thirty-six great-grandkids, thirteen great-great-grandkids and two god-kids; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
